Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo said on Monday that he would do everything in his power to arrest the phenomenon of vigilantism in the country.

Akufo-Addo said he would not walk the path others trod who found it convenient to turn a blind eye to the criminal misdeeds of their followers and took no action.

Instead, he would be walking the path of making reality the principle of the rule of law, and the idea of equality of every citizen before the law, Akufo-Addo said.

“Wrongdoers wear no political colors. They are just wrongdoers, and will be dealt with as such,” he said at a meeting with traditional leaders in Kumasi.

Akufo-Addo’s comment followed reports of growing incidences of political vigilantism in the country.

In April, the United Nations condemned acts of impunity perpetrated by Delta Force, a vigilante group affiliated to the ruling New Patriotic Party, in the aftermath of last year’s general election. Enditem
