Mr Fred Offei, the District Chief Executive for Shai-Osudoku has urged Ghanaians to grow gardens at homes to derive economic and health benefit while beautifying their environments.

He said Green Ghana and Planting of Food and Jobs were opportunities that the citizenry could tap into to transform their economic and healthy situations while creating climate friendly atmosphere.

Mr Offei gave the advice in an interview with the Ghana News Agency during the celebration of the Green Ghana Day at Shai-Osudoku in the Greater Accra Region.

He entreated the public to develop the habit of planting trees in their surroundings to gain diverse benefits as it would help to fix the forest cover, protect water bodies and reduce global warming.

The DCE said every citizen was bonded by the laws of Ghana to protect and safeguard the environment and that, “we should all play our small roles to ensure the sustainability of the planet.”

Mr Offei called on the people to avoid sitting on the fence, but rather support the Green Ghana initiative by contributing to its survival for the benefit of future generations, saying, there was the need to inculcate into the youth the value of planting trees and its associated profits.

“It is sad to mention that Ghana’s forest cover over the years has been depleted over an alarming rate due to deforestation, land degradation, bush burning among other negative practices. We in Shai-Osudoku are proud to be the pacesetters having planted over 1000 trees across our 22 electoral areas and the forest reserve in 2021,” he stated.

Madam Linda Akweley Ocloo, the Member of Parliament for the area decried the wanton depletion of the forest reserve mentioning the historical Dodowa Forest as an example, which has become a pale shadow of itself.

She called on the District Assembly and the Forestry Commission to up their games and institute stringent measures to protect the remaining forest for future generations.
