Ghana’s Minister for Finance, Mohammed Amin Adam, has announced that the iconic Tema-Mpakadan railway line is nearly complete, marking a significant milestone in infrastructure development.
During the presentation of the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Tuesday (23 July), Minister Amin Adam highlighted the railway’s strategic importance in fostering economic growth, creating jobs, and enhancing national connectivity.
Adam noted that the Tema-Mpakadan railway, a key component of Ghana’s multi-modal transportation network, is 99% complete and is slated for total completion later this year. The project aims to bolster connectivity between Tema Port and the northern regions of Ghana, facilitating efficient transportation of goods and passengers.
The railway forms part of the initial phase of the expansive 1,000km Ghana-Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project, which seeks to establish a railway link from the Port of Tema to Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso.
Construction on the Tema-Mpakadan railway commenced in July 2018 with an initial completion target of 2021, but delays attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the timeline. Despite setbacks, significant progress has been made, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing national infrastructure and regional connectivity.
Upon completion, the railway is expected to facilitate smoother logistics operations, boost trade, and stimulate economic activities. The project aligns with Ghana’s vision for sustainable development and regional integration across West Africa.
Minister Amin Adam expressed optimism about the railway’s transformative impact, emphasizing its role in propelling Ghana’s economic agenda forward and reinforcing its position as a regional hub for trade and commerce.
The final stages of construction are underway, with stakeholders eagerly anticipating the railway’s operational debut shortly.
