Chief Corporate Services and Sustainability Officer at MTN Ghana Madam Adwoa Wiafe, has urged young girls to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education.
She emphasized the importance of increasing female participation in STEM fields, highlighting how such education can offer unique perspectives, enhance digital skills, and ultimately transform lives.
Madam Wiafe shared this message during the Girls-in-ICT Open Day Programme, organized by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation (MoCD) in collaboration with MTN Ghana.
“Today, MTN Ghana welcomed 100 girls from the Girls in ICT program, which is part of our commitment to supporting digitalization and promoting ICT education among young girls.
Traditionally, ICT and math fields have been male-dominated, and we aim to change that by encouraging more girls to explore these areas,” she explained.
The event aimed to introduce these young girls to the world of ICT early on and dispel myths and misconceptions about the field.
By bringing them into our offices, we hoped to inspire and motivate them, showcasing the diverse opportunities in ICT. Our goal is for these girls to recognize and seize the potential that lies ahead in the digital world,” she added.
The day also focused on equipping the girls with essential knowledge about the ICT sector through mentorship programs, workshops, and various open-day activities, preparing them for future ICT-related careers.
The sessions provided a platform for women working in ICT to share their personal stories and professional experiences, offering valuable guidance for the girls’ career choices.
Over 100 Girls in ICT from the Savannah, Northern, and Eastern regions had the unique opportunity to be mentored by MTN Ghana’s ICT and technology department staff.
Madam Olivia Mifetu, Internal Communications Adviser at MTN Ghana, shared the company’s history and guided the girls through the activities of the MTN Ghana Foundation. She also led them on a tour of the MTN Head Office, including the Network Monitoring Center.
The tour offered the girls an engaging and informative experience, providing hands-on insights into the diverse world of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Issah Shamsiyah from Tiyumba M/A J.H.S in Tamale and Abubakari Belinda Abrah from St. Paul’s Anglican Experimental/OBO Kwaku, beneficiaries of the Girls in ICT program, expressed their gratitude to MTN Ghana and the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation.
“I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity,” said Issah Shamsiyah. “The exposure to ICT and meeting professionals in the field has been eye-opening and motivating. I feel more confident about pursuing a career in technology.”
Abubakari Belinda Abrah echoed similar sentiments. “This program has shown me the exciting possibilities within ICT. I appreciate the support from MTN Ghana and the Ministry for making this experience possible. It has sparked a new passion in me for technology.”
