In a statement read on behalf of the Minister of Trade and Industry, John Alan K. Kyeremanten, the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr. Dawarnoba Beaka said, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become increasingly important to national development because, today’s heightened interest in the proper role of business in society has been promoted by increased sensitivity to awareness of environmental and ethical issues.
In the light of this, the German Development Organisation (GIZ) has on Monday, inaugurated a Corporate Social Responsibility Secretariat at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Accra, aiming to ensure that, the interest of businesses are extended beyond localities and not just concentrated on few pockets.
Mr. Dawarnoba Beaka also said, “they will also work closely with non-governmental organisations who have the pulse for development needs at the grassroots and can provide last mile connectivity in the delivery of programmes.”
According to him, one core principle within CSR space, was the principle of conducting business in an economically, socially and environmentally responsible manner, and weaving that principle into the intrinsic fabric of every company.
This principle, he also said captured within the policy calls for an extensive collaboration between government and the cooperate sector to provide the basics for improving the quality of life in the rural urban areas.
He commended GIZ for their support right from the policy development process through to the establishment of the secretariat to its launching, and further urged the team that would be in charge of the secretariat, to work with transparency, ethical behaviour, respect for stakeholders, respect for the rule of law, respect for international norms of behaviour and respect for human rights as well accountability.
The Team Leader for GIZ, Mr. John C. Duti on his part said, GIZ’s assistance is in conformity of a request by the Ministry of Trade and Industry, in order to ensure a successful philanthropic relations at the Ministry.
He indicated that, GIZ has been doing strategic CSR over the years, partnering other associates to implement strategic CSR for high level sustenance. And thus, were ready to share their views with the Ministry towards a sustainable development.
Meanwhile, he emphasised on the other roles of the Secretariat which includes; Facilitation of capacity development for all stakeholders; resource mobilization for supporting CSR policy implementation; development and implementation of appropriate communication strategy; collation of documentation on all CSR activities.
The rest also includes; monitoring and evaluation of CSR activities, the development of a strategy and a guidelines on CSR, the promotion and facilitation of national, regional and district CSR networks and partnerships, develop framework and make recommendations to the national steering committee.
