The Accra Regional Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Secretary, Mrs. Gifty Apanbil is appealing to all GNAT members to give their concern to the secretariat to deduct ?1.00 from their monthly dues to support Swedish Cancer Foundation.

In an interview with The Moment, she disclosed that for the past few years it has come to the knowledge of the secretariat that most of the teachers are dying. A research conducted by the association revealed most of the teachers perished through breast and cervical cancer which she claims is very alarming.

Although teachers are ensured under the teachers grant in which if a member became incapacitated through sickness, accident or dies in active service some financial support is being provided for such a teacher.

GNAT secretariat also assists members to offset medical bills when the need arises. There is still a need to put measures in place to tackle the epidemic which is gradually destroying their noble members.

It is in this light that the leadership of the Association is in collaboration with non- governmental Organization called Swedish Cancer Foundation. The foundation will be tasked with the responsibilities of providing modern state of the art facilities to screen and treat members. This is to reduce cancer drastically among teachers.

Mrs. Gifty Apanbil disclosed that each member will be provided with a card that automatically covers the holder and two other members of their family, with which they will undergo free screening and treatment when needed.

This, according to her, will reduce the pressure and exorbitant expenses that comes with cancer and its implications. However Mrs. Apanbil spoke on their salary being given to them which she claim does not even take them home, saying, ?it is about time government take a critical look at our salary.?

Meanwhile, the Accra Regional Deputy Secretary of the Association, Joshua Kobina Aidoo is calling on Teachers from private schools who are not part of the organization to come on board? for them to enjoy all the numerous benefits that GNAT have to offer to its members and? to stand together as a great force to champion the course of Teachers in Ghana .
