Two people died on arrival at the Agona Swedru Government Municipal Hospital whiles nine others sustained various degrees of injuries when a Hyundai bus rammed over them on the Swedru/Winneba highway.
The deceased are Mr Godfred Nyamekye, 20, and Mr Mohammed Abu, 24.
A source close to the Agona Swedru Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service told Ghana News Agency that the accident occurred at 0700 hrs when the youth at Gomoa Osamkrom organized a float to mark activities leading to the celebration of the ‘Gomoa Two- Weeks’.
The ‘Gomoa Two –Weeks’ is celebrated by the citizens of Gomoa both at home and abroad from 1st January to February and it is used to highlight final funeral rites of their love ones, Akwambo festivals, weddings and other social activities.
The source said two of the injured people are in critical condition and doctors and nurses at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Ward of the Agona Swedru Government are working around the clock to save them.
A police source said Mr Seth Gurah, the driver of Hyundai bus, was driving on top speed with no lights and rather used double hazards of the vehicle to drive.
The source said the organizers were controlling traffic on both sections of the highway and tried in vain to warn the driver to reduce his speed but he failed to comply with their warnings and rammed into the crowd.
A source said the driver was severely beaten by the mob and was saved by some Good Samaritans who sent him to the hospital.
According to the police source the angry crowd destroyed the Hyundai bus as well.
The source said the driver is responding to treatment has been placed under police guard.
The two bodies have been deposited at the Agona Swedru Government Hospital morgue for autopsy.
