Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State and Visitor to the government-owned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, has ordered the replacement of the Emir of Suleja, Mallam Awal Ibrahim as chancellor of the university.

He has been replaced by the Emir of Minna, Alhaji Umar Faruq Bahago (CON) as the new chancellor of the university and this is with immediate effect. Six weeks ago the state government queried the emir for his failure to show concern for the victims of the December 25, 2011bomb blast in Madalla in the emir’s domain.
There are no fewer than five incidents of bomb blast in Suleja Emirate alone in the last one year, which have claimed lives and property.

Secretary to the Niger State Government, Mr. Daniel Shashere disclosed that the new chancellor replaced the Emir of Suleja, Mallam Awwal Ibrahim (CON) and with immediate effect. However, sources from government circles disclosed that there was nothing extra-ordinary in the change of guards at the university, pointing out that the outgoing chancellor had held sway at the university since its inception seven years ago.

The statement added that the appointment of Bahago to the challenging position was based on merit, proven integrity and outstanding record of performance in his previous assignments, especially when he was the former chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma. “As a former chancellor of Ambrose Ali University Ekpoma, the emir of Minna is expected to bring his knowledge and wealth of experience to bear in the performance of his new assignment.

The statement added that the appointment was coming when the university was in need of transformation to make the institution the centre of excellence and research. The state government thanked the former Chancellor for his tremendous contributions to the overall development of the institution in the past seven years.
