Two government officials in the Bono Region narrowly escaped a harrowing armed robbery attack on the Berekum-Drobo highway, highlighting security challenges in the area.
Mr. Andrews Bediako, the Municipal Chief Executive of Jaman South, and Mr. Solomon Owusu, the District Chief Executive of Jaman North, returned from a meeting in Sunyani when they encountered the armed assailants near the Fetentaa Refugee Camp.
Describing the ordeal to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Bediako recounted how approximately five armed robbers suddenly appeared, firing gunshots and attempting to halt vehicles on the road.
“They emerged suddenly, firing shots and demanding us to stop. They even damaged my vehicle’s windscreen with a piece of lumber, but we managed to accelerate away from the dangerous situation,” Mr Bediako stated.
During the incident, one of the officials’ vehicles experienced mechanical failure, but they could all escape unharmed. Swift action was taken to alert the police and warn oncoming vehicles, prompting the robbers to flee into the nearby bush.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about security along highways in the region, with calls for enhanced measures to safeguard commuters and prevent such attacks in the future.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, aiming to apprehend the perpetrators and bolster security measures along the Berekum-Drobo route to prevent further incidents.
