The government of Ghana has successfully reached an agreement with the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) over the conditions of service for its members, effectively ending an ongoing strike.

CETAG initiated the strike in response to the government’s directive to freeze salaries for its members, excluding college principals, in July 2024.

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) had instructed the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to suspend salaries, prompting CETAG to withdraw all services.

Minister of Employment and Labour Relations Ignatius Baffour Awuah confirmed in a media interview on Friday, August 2, that negotiations had been successfully concluded.

“We have concluded the discussions with them.

We have negotiated and signed on to it. I have signed my portion, and all my colleagues who are supposed to sign have signed.

In their case, their leadership have also signed,” Minister Awuah stated.

He emphasized the importance of resolving migration-related issues, urging CETAG to expedite their processes to align with the agreed terms.

The agreement marks a significant development in restoring normalcy to colleges of education across Ghana. It ensures that CETAG members can resume their duties with clarity on their conditions of service.
