Greater Accra Region emerged victorious at the 14th Korean Ambassador’s Taekwondo Championships, held last Saturday at Ga Mashie Hall, Trust Sports Emporium in Accra.
Led by Coach Fayoe Serlom, Greater Accra secured 185 points with nine gold, eight silver, and 12 bronze medals, clinching the top position.
Volta Region followed in second place with 72 points, while Ashanti and Upper East secured third and fourth places with 68 and 52 points, respectively.
Other participating regions included Eastern, Bono, Upper West, Western, and Central, all of whom contributed to the vibrant and united Taekwondo community in Ghana.
The president of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation, Mr. Lartey Otu, highlighted that the championship aimed to prepare young athletes for the 2026 Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal. He congratulated all participants and winners and encouraged them to continue training to achieve their aspirations.
Mr Otu took a moment to recognize former top athletes and coaches, including the late Shaibu Yakubu and Da Rocha, who had represented Ghana at international events like the Olympic Games. Their achievements serve as an inspiration for the next generation of Taekwondo athletes.
During the event, Mr Otu received a citation from the Ghana Para-Taekwondo in recognition of his contributions. The Republic of Korea Ambassador, HE K.S. Park, highlighted the growing popularity of Taekwondo in Ghana and its significant benefits in physical development and relationship-building, encouraging all participants to continue their training and dedication.
He pledged support for Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 Youth Olympics and looked forward to the 15th edition of the Korean Ambassador’s Championship.
Organized by the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) and sponsored by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the Inter-regional championships featured young athletes aged 13 to 17 competing in Kyorugi and Poomsae. Athletes competed in five weight categories for juniors and cadets, striving for medals, selection, and recognition.
James Sedoh and Zitta Tornyevah were awarded the best male and female junior players, respectively, while Jayden Nettey and Setorme Tornyeva excelled in the junior Poomsae categories. Other winners received hampers, medals, and certificates.
The referees and officials who conducted a seminar at the Korea Sports Complex before the competition were commended for their performance. The “Mission to Senegal 2026 Junior Olympics” provided valuable exposure for emerging athletes and referees alike, fostering growth and excellence in Ghana’s Ghana’s Taekwondo community.
