The Chiefs and people of Akatsi South Municipality in the Volta Region marked this year’s ‘Green Ghana Day’ with a call to embrace the habit of tree planting towards mitigating the occurrence of climate change.

The event, which was targeted at restoring Ghana’s forests, would also drive efforts towards an aggressive afforestation programme in restoring the country’s lost forest cover and contributes to the global efforts to fight climate change.

Marking the day at Akatsi Duawodome Basic school, Togbe Dorglo Anumah VI, the Paramount Chief of Avenor Traditional Area and President of the Avenor Traditional Council, led the tree planting exercise together with Mr Kofitsey Martin Nyahe, the Municipal Chief Executive of the area.

Togbe Dorglo VI urged traditional authorities to champion the importance of tree planting in the various communities as well as to campaign against acts of burning of trees.

He cautioned school pupils to protect the trees, adding “anyone caught destroying the trees will be punished severely.”

Mr Nyahe, on his part, said the youth ought to understand the values of planting and nurturing of trees with their associated benefits.

This, he said, called for concerted efforts to combat the declining rate of the country’s forest cover.

President Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo early this year launched the 2022 edition of Green Ghana Day to plant 20 million trees.

The exercise, which was observed by chiefs and queen mothers, assembly members, officials from the Forestry Commission, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), ended at Wuxor, a farming community within Akatsi South.

The authorities further revealed that more trees such as Cyber, Affram, Caccia, and others would be planted in the Municipality.

This year’s event was on the theme, “Mobilising for a Greener Future.”
