Mr. Tewolde GebreMariam, the Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines has paid a visit to the accident scene involving one of the airline’s flights, Flight ET 302.
The said flight was flying from the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to Nairobi in Kenya but crashed at 08.44 local time.
A statement issued in Accra, after a press conference held at Ethiopian Airlines Headquarters said the plane crashed shortly after takeoff en route to Nairobi from Addis Ababa.
It said the Group CEO, who had traveled to the scene of the crash said “It is too early to speculate the cause of the accident and further investigation will be carried out to find out the cause of the accident in collaboration with all stakeholders.”
It said these stakeholders would include the aircraft manufacturer Boeing, Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority and other international entities to maintain the international standard and information would be provided once the cause was identified.
The statement said Ethiopian Airlines would provide all the necessary support to the families of the victims.
It said a senior captain named Yared Getachew with a cumulative flight hour of more than 8000 and with a commendable performance was commanding the flight along with first officer Ahmed Nur Mohammod Nur, who had a flight hour of 200.
It said in all 149 passengers and 8 crew members were on board the flight with victims coming from 35 Nationalities.
The plane had Kenyans, Canadians, Ethiopians, Chinese, Italians, France, UK, Russians, Egypt, Germans, Indians, Spanish, Slovakia, Sweden, Polish, Australian, Israel, Moroccan, Belgian, Djibouti, Indonesian, Ireland, Norway, Rwandan, Sudanese, Mozambique, Togolese, Uganda, Nigerian, Nepal, Yemeni and UN passport, Somalia and Serbian on board.
The statement said the crashed B-737-800MAX airplane flew back to Addis from Johannesburg this morning to its yet another flight bound to Nairobi underwent a rigorous first check maintenance in February 04,2019.
It said the Ethiopian Airlines Group expressed its profound sorrow and deepest condolences to the families of the victims and their loved ones on the tragic plane accident.
It said the Airline would release further information as soon as it is available.
