Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has cast uncertainty over the future of goalkeeper Ederson amid ongoing interest from the Saudi Pro League.
Following City’s 4-3 defeat to Celtic in a pre-season friendly in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Guardiola acknowledged that Ederson’s tenure at the club this summer is not assured.
“I’d like him to stay, but it depends on other clubs,” Guardiola remarked during a post-match interview. “I don’t know the situation. There have been no contacts in the last few days. It’s a question of training, being with us until the transfer window finishes, and we’ll see.”
Ederson, a pivotal player for City last season, notably faced a half-time substitution during the Celtic match, with Stefan Ortega taking over in goal.
Despite Ederson’s role as the primary goalkeeper, Guardiola’s decision to start Ortega in the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Real Madrid has fueled speculation about Ederson’s future.
Guardiola clarified his decision, explaining, “That’s why we didn’t give him more minutes. I don’t know what’s going to happen. He knows the situation, and we’ll see.”
As Manchester City prepares to defend their Premier League title and pursue a record fourth consecutive championship, the club awaits clarity on Ederson’s status as the transfer window unfolds.
Guardiola emphasized that the focus remains on preparing for the upcoming season and building on recent achievements.
