Guinea Bissau’s economy minister barred from travelling abroad

Guinea Bissau's Economy Minister Geraldo Martins was on Monday barred from travelling to Lisbon, Portugal, and forced to return home while at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport in Bissau, a judicial source has said.

The source said the measure was taken by the public prosecutor, following a court ruling.

Martins was questioned on Jan. 26 by the prosecutor in relation to overpricing of certain tenders as well as high expenditures of foreign medical treatment of former combatants.

The questioning was termed as “very strange and suspect” by the government.

The minister denied the prosecutor’s accusations, reiterating that he acted legally “as minister for economy and finance, and in strict conformity with the law.”

Martins said there is no law stipulating the maximum amount of money that should be spent on treatment of civil servants. Enditem
