Gulf of Mexico pipeline leak causes ‘eye of fire’

A fire in the sea off Mexico due to a gas leak in an underwater pipeline was extinguished after five and a half hours, the state oil company Pemex said on Friday.

The fire occurred 150 metres away from a drilling platform of the Ku-Maloob-Zaap oil production facility in the Gulf of Mexico.

A video purporting to show the fire went viral on social media outside Mexico, with some Twitter users referring to the intense, orange bubbling mass in the water as an “eye of fire.”

According to Pemex, there were no injuries and no people had to be brought to safety.

Normal operations have been restored and the incident is being investigated, it said.

The head of the energy and environment agency Asea, Angel Carrizales, wrote on Twitter that no oil had leaked.

Pemex is one of the most indebted energy companies in the world.

Due to a lack of investment in modern technology, oil production in Mexico has been falling steadily for years.

Former Pemex boss Emilio Lozoya was indicted on corruption charges and extradited from Spain to Mexico last July.
