The Burundi-based private radio reported that gunmen forced the car to stop and took all valuable objects that three passengers had including money and mobile phones before burning the car.
The radio indicated that the gunmen exchanged gunfire with soldiers for about half an hour and then ran away with the three passengers through Rukoko natural forest, but added that one of the abductees managed to flee before the gunmen could cross the River Rusizi making border between Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo).
According to the radio, debris of the burned car were removed from the road on Monday morning.
Security has been disrupted for several times in Burundi’s Rukoko natural reserve with ambushes on the road linking Bujumbura to Cibitoke.
Ambushes and attacks against military posts near Rukoko forest reserve are mounted by gunmen who often retreat to the Democratic Republic of Congo’s territory. Enditem
