At least 11 people were killed following an attack by unidentified gunmen on a town in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Katsina, said the police Wednesday.

Gambo Isa, a spokesman for the police in Katsina, told reporters in the capital city of Katsina that eight others were wounded when the gunmen on Tuesday evening attacked the town of Batsari and began to shoot indiscriminately at residents.

“They came when some people were still in the mosque for the evening prayers. They came in large numbers and started shooting sporadically,” Isa said, adding an investigation into the attack is underway.

Batsari is one of the areas most frequently attacked by bandits in Katsina, as it shares a boundary with the Rugu Forest identified as a large hideout of bandits in the neighboring northern state of Zamfara.

Armed banditry has been a primary security threat in Nigeria’s northern and central regions, resulting in deaths and kidnappings in recent months. Enditem
