The Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA) has added its voice to the urgent calls from Organized Labour and civil society groups for an immediate ban on illegal mining, commonly known as “Galamsey.” The situation demands immediate attention and action.

As a critical stakeholder in Ghana’s economic landscape, GUTA has expressed its deep concern over the severe and potentially irreversible impact of illegal mining on the country’s natural resources and long-term financial sustainability.

In a statement, the union emphasized its commitment to ensuring that Ghana’s resources are used responsibly and preserved for future generations.

GUTA noted that recent media coverage highlights a critical turning point in the fight against illegal mining.

The union pointed out that while small-scale mining has been a longstanding practice, the current influx of foreign entities—particularly Chinese operators with heavy machinery—has exacerbated the degradation of the sector. These foreign entities often operate without regard for environmental regulations, using large-scale machinery that causes significant environmental damage.

GUTA warned that without immediate intervention, the nation risks irreparable damage from illegal mining activities.

The union has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency, mobilize all necessary resources, and take decisive action to eliminate the problem.

“We strongly believe urgent action is required to address this issue effectively. If left unchecked, the long-term consequences of illegal mining could be devastating,” GUTA stated.

“We hope that the President will act decisively on the numerous appeals and establish a lasting legacy by resolving this crisis before the end of his term.”

GUTA’s call aligns with broader national concerns over the environmental and economic impact of illegal mining, underscoring the need for comprehensive measures to protect Ghana’s natural resources and ensure sustainable development. The public’s support and involvement are crucial in this endeavour.
