Dr Hassan Ayariga, founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), has called for implementing a Constitutional Instrument (CI) to regulate the selection process of the Vice President in Ghana.
According to Ayariga, the CI should mandate that any sitting Vice President who decides to run for the presidency must resign from their current position.
In such cases, a new Vice President would be appointed to replace the candidate for the upcoming presidential election.
Ayariga highlighted two main reasons for his proposal.
Firstly, he argued that a sitting Vice President running for president compromises their role as Vice President. Secondly, he expressed concerns that a Vice President could misuse government resources and state funds during their presidential campaign.
Specifically, Ayariga suggested that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia should resign from his current position to ensure fairness and integrity in Ghana’s electoral process.
The proposal addresses potential conflicts of interest and upholds transparency in Ghana’s democratic procedures regarding vice presidential candidates seeking higher office.
