Have You Seen Coyotes in Your Neighborhood?

According to Stan Gehrt, a professor of wildlife ecology at Ohio State University, coyotes may be the start of a larger urban carnivore trend. In recent years, the?canine?predators have steadily increased their range and can now be found across North America.

“They’re the ones that are kind of pushing the envelope right now,” said Gehrt. “It used to be rural areas where we would have this challenge of co-existence versus conflict with carnivores. In the future, and I would say currently, it’s cities where we’re going to have this intersection between people and carnivores.”

Apparently, coyotes actually thrive in many suburban and urban settings. Gehrt estimates (conservatively) that at least 2,000 coyotes live in the greater Chicago area, which is home to nine million people. A pack of coyotes even lives only miles from O?Hare International Airport?one of the busiest airports in the world; they currently set the record for the smallest coyote territory ever observed.
