Parliament has passed the Hazardous and electronic waste control and management bill 2016.

The bill is set to provide for the control,management and disposal of hazardous waste and electronic waste and for related purposes.

wpid-Plastic-waste-640x411.jpgDiscarded electrical and electronic equipment such as computers, mobile phones,refrigerators and television sets are considered to be among the fastest growing waste streams in the world with estimated five to ten percent (5-10%) increase in global e-waste annually.

The present hazardous waste management in Ghana does not only pollute natural resources and endanger the health of people but also affects substantial business opportunity in material recovery and recycling.

Statistics from the environmental protection agency on Ghana’s e- waste assessment on importation of electronic equipment in 2009 revealed that used equipment represent 70% of all electrical and electronic gadgets brought into the country.

Briefing the media,chairman of the committee on Environment, science and technology Hon Simon Edem Asimah stated that the importation of electrical and electronic waste into the country has brought about many discomfort taking into consideration it effects. Therefore, this bill will go a long way to help the country as electronics been brought to the country will have to meet the requirement of the bill before it accepted.

He added that it will also expand the duties of the Environmental Protection Agency as they will have to ensure that the right things are done .
