The Ministry of Health has taken a significant step in the case involving Joy Gyaten, a retired driver implicated in the disappearance of a consignment containing a substantial quantity of approximately three million condoms and contraceptives valued at 1.3 million cedis in 2022, by referring it to the police for further investigation.
During a session of the Public Accounts Committee, Emma Ofori Agyemang, the Ministry’s Director of Policy, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation, disclosed that the incident had been reported to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Although the driver was initially arrested, he was subsequently released on bail due to poor health following a stroke.
Mrs Agyemang stated that the Ministry collaborates with the CID to ensure a thorough investigation.
The Attorney General’s office is reviewing the case file and awaiting further action.
James Klutse Avedzi, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, emphasized the importance of recovering the funds lost in the incident.
He acknowledged the driver’s health challenges and the ongoing, hopeful cooperation between the Ministry and law enforcement authorities to seek resolution.
“We reported the matter to the CID and are cooperating fully with them,” Mrs Agyemang stated.
“The delay in proceedings has prompted us to follow up, and we await a definitive conclusion before engaging further with the Attorney General.”
The Ministry’s unwavering commitment to resolving the issue and ensuring accountability in distributing public healthcare resources instils confidence in the public.
