FC Samartex, the Ghana Premier League (GPL) champions, have secured the services of Hearts of Oak captain Kofi Agbesimah on a two-year contract.
The announcement was made on Friday, July 26, 2024.
Agbesimah, a highly-rated centre-back, has left Hearts of Oak after expressing dissatisfaction with the club. Despite having a year remaining on his contract, Agbesimah publicly stated, “I’m not happy at Hearts of Oak. I want to leave,” citing internal issues as the reason for his departure.
The signing of Agbesimah is seen as a significant boost for FC Samartex as they prepare for their debut CAF Champions League campaign. The club’s statement highlighted Agbesimah’s experience and leadership, referring to him as a “Timber Giant”. His arrival is expected to have a positive impact on their defence, reassuring fans about the team’s performance.
Before Agbesimah’s transfer, Hearts of Oak coach Aboubakar Ouattara had emphasized the club’s prestige over individual players. “Hearts of Oak is bigger than any player,” Ouattara remarked, reinforcing that players wishing to leave would be permitted to do so.
Agbesimah, 28, joined Hearts of Oak from Bechem United last season and quickly became a crucial figure in the team, earning the captaincy in March 2024. His move to FC Samartex marks a new chapter for the player and the Samreboi-based club.
Hearts of Oak, who narrowly avoided relegation last season, are expected to make significant changes to their squad. This anticipation adds an element of intrigue to the team’s future, especially after their critical win against Bechem United on the final day of the previous season.
