The High Court in Accra, in a demonstration of respect for the law, has denied former Public Procurement Authority (PPA) CEO Agyenim Boateng Adjei’s request to return his passport to facilitate international travel.
The decision, made on July 24, 2024, comes amidst ongoing legal proceedings against Boateng Adjei, who faces fresh charges from the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Boateng Adjei, charged in April 2024 with eight counts related to using his public office for personal gain and improperly influencing procurement processes, had previously been granted bail. As part of his bail conditions, he was required to surrender all passports to the court registry.
The OSP opposed Boateng Adjei’s passport release, arguing that the request lacked sufficient justification. Prosecutors highlighted a similar case involving Sedinam Christine Tamakloe, whose passport release on medical grounds led to her departure and failure to return.
The court, in a fair and just manner, noted that Boateng Adjei’s stated reason for travel—to accompany his child, an American citizen, to the United States—could be fulfilled by another family member. Consequently, the court deemed the request insufficiently justified and dismissed the application.
The case has been adjourned to October 18 and October 22, 2024, for the completion of the Case Management Conference.
