The HOPE for Little Lives Foundation, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) has performed 28 surgeries in two days for children who need the service at the Wa Regional Hospital.
Some of the surgeries performed included inguinal hernias, undescended testes, umbilical hernias, circumcision, and excision of lumps/bumps.
Dr Maame Tekyiwa Botchwey, a Paediatric Surgeon at the Ridge Hospital in Accra and Founder of the NGO, said Christmas was a time for giving and that the gesture was in fulfilment of scripture according to John 3:16.
Dr Botchwey was speaking in an exclusive interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Wa after a “Thanks Giving Service” held at the Epiphany Congregation of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Wa to mark the end of weeklong activities in the region.
“The main goal is to ensure that every child receives the right support in terms of health and education among others for them to become what God has called them to be’, she said.
The Founder of HOPE for Little Lives said on 24th December, 2021, they also screened over 200 children and gave health education to parents on malnutrition and others.
She said on 25th December, 2021, they attended to over 400 children at Sombo in the Nadowli-Kaleo District and gave out medication whilst also treating them to a Christmas party.
Dr Botchwey said they also distributed almost 1,000 packaged clothes to the children.
Explaining why she chose to come to the Upper West Region, the Paediatric Surgeon said she first visited the region on a medical outreach during her time as a medical student and during the period, she encountered children with poor oral hygiene, poor clothes and poor education.
“This informed my decision to return to the region to offer my little support towards the development of these little lives through my NGO, HOPE for Little Lives”, she said.
She expressed gratitude to the first female Paediatric Surgeon in Ghana, Prof. Afua Hesse, for coming with the team to help in performing the surgeries.
She also thanked Dr Robert Amesiya, the Medical Director of the Wa Regional Hospital and his staff for the warm reception and support, which according to her aided the smooth execution of their activities.
Dr Botchwey also expressed gratitude to her international partner: the Consulate of the Republic of Congo in Ghana as well as her media, corporate, and individual partners.
