The Vice President and flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has stated that he would not support LGBTQ+ efforts and activities in the country, explaining that the practice contradicts the teachings of both the Quran and the Bible. According to him, apart from such teachings in the two Holy Books, the country’s cultural values do not support such a position.

The Vice President was accompanied by a high-powered delegation of party officials, including the National Campaign Manager and former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Dan Botwe as well as the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Stephen Ayensu Ntim. Other members of the entourage included the former General Secretary of the party, Mr. Kwabena Adjei Agyepong, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Bui Power Project, Hon. Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, Deputy Minister of Energy, Hon. Herbert Krapah as well as the CEO of the National Lotteries Authority (NLA), Mr. Sammi Awuku.

Party faithful and supporters of the NPP from across the nine (9) constituencies of the region were also present to grace the occasion. Youth groups, motorcycle operators, nurses, and teachers as well as residents of Dambai also poured out in their numbers to welcome the Veep to the region.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Bawumia described the church and faith-based organizations in the country as the nation’s foremost development partners, saying the government has not taken advantage of these religious partners enough to move the country forward. He lauded the immense contribution of the country’s religious bodies to the development of the country through the establishment of schools and hospitals across the length and breadth of the country.

Touching on the practice of the controversial LGBTQ+ and its activities in the country, the Vice President assured the clergy and indeed all Ghanaians that he would protect the Ghanaian values and also not accede to any pressure from any quarter in the world for Ghana to accept LGBTQ+ activities. “We will never agree. We would defend our values no matter the cost. We will not do what God disagrees with otherwise this country will not get the blessings that we are getting,” Dr. Bawumia emphasized.

He announced that as part of his vision for the youth of the country, his government would institute a free tertiary education policy for Persons With Disability (PWDs), adding that his government would implement a quota employment policy to enable graduate and skilled PWDs to get employment after finishing their educational courses.

Describing these PWDs as very sharp and intelligent, Dr. Bawumia argued that these persons cannot be left out in his future government policies.

The NPP flagbearer also touched on job creation for the youth, explaining that his government would train one million youths in digital skills to enable them to catch up with the current digital revolution journey. According to Dr. Bawumia, the acquisition of these skills by the youth would open opportunities for them to work from home or anywhere on their laptops for institutions and agencies in Australia, Japan, and other parts of the world.

That is why he has been a member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade as well as the National Patron of the Brigade in Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia disclosed that his association with Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell in his cured lepers project has resulted in many success stories for cured lepers in Ghana over the years.

Nyamenyuie urged the Vice President to be at peace with all and sundry irrespective of their political and party affiliations. He also urged Dr. Bawumia not only to preach the peace trait he espouses at all times but also to pass it on to all those around him until that message reaches the grassroots.
