The International AIDS Society (IAS), in partnership with Gilead Sciences and local organizations, has recognized 18 frontline healthcare workers as the 2024 Me and My Healthcare Provider (MMHCP) Campaign Champions.
These individuals from Brazil, Hong Kong, Mexico, Taiwan, and Türkiye were honoured for their exemplary efforts in delivering stigma-free HIV services.
The MMHCP Champions were acknowledged for their dedication to providing high-quality HIV prevention, treatment, and care to key populations amidst ongoing challenges of stigma and discrimination. Despite advancements, the People Living with HIV Stigma Index 2.0 Global Report 2023 highlights persisting issues, including internalized stigma among 93.5% of respondents and discrimination from healthcare staff encountered by 3% of those surveyed.
Initiated in 2021 and supported by Gilead Sciences, the MMHCP Campaign expanded this year to Türkiye, marking a significant milestone in combating HIV-related stigma on a global scale. This expansion not only underscores the campaign’s commitment to fostering inclusive healthcare environments and advancing people-centred care globally but also inspires hope for a future free from HIV stigma.
Birgit Poniatowski, Executive Director of IAS, emphasized the importance of addressing HIV stigma: “Our MMHCP Champions and partners are pivotal in creating a world where HIV no longer poses a threat to public health or individual well-being. They champion equitable access to care, empowering individuals living with HIV to seek support and treatment without fear of discrimination.”
Janet Dorling, Senior Vice President of Gilead Sciences, Intercontinental Region and Gilead Patient Solutions, reaffirmed Gilead’s commitment to reducing barriers to healthcare: “We are proud to support this year’s MMHCP Champions who share our vision of improving health globally. By placing people at the centre of our efforts, we aim to eliminate stigma and ensure everyone can access their right to health and well-being.”
The MMHCP Campaign celebrates frontline healthcare workers and serves as a platform to inspire others in the fight against HIV stigma, encouraging the replication of successful strategies worldwide.
