Ibn Chambas to brief UN on security in West Africa


Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Special Representative of the Secretary General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), will present to the Security Council this Thursday 23 July 2017 his activity report covering the period from 1st January 2017 to 30 June 2017.

Many political, security and humanitarian developments marked the first quarter of 2017 in the region of West Africa and the Sahel.

In his address, Mr. Ibn Chambas will focus on the persistence of security threats such as terrorist activities, cross-border crime, as well as trafficking in drugs, arms and persons. He will also discuss the security and humanitarian situation in the Lake Chad Basin, which remains a cause for concern despite efforts to combat Boko Haram.

Mr. Ibn Chambas will also address the peaceful resolution of the post-electoral crisis in the Gambia, the ongoing political reforms and the upcoming elections in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Senegal.

Implementation of the United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel (UNISS) and the need to strengthen coordination with the various partners will also be addressed.
