Dr Humphery Ayim-Darke, a key member of the nine-person committee formed by the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) to oversee the 2024 Presidential and Vice Presidential debates, has pledged that the committee will actively engage with political parties and candidates to secure their participation.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced its intention to boycott the debates, citing insufficient prior engagement.
In a recent interview with Citi News, Dr. Ayim-Darke stated that efforts are ongoing to persuade all qualified candidates to participate.
“We are engaging with the political parties and are confident that, in due course, we will announce our position,” Dr. Ayim-Darke said.
Dr. Ayim-Darke highlighted the IEA’s successful history in conducting such debates, even when some parties initially declined to participate, as a testament to their capability.
Dr. Ayim-Darke reiterated the IEA‘s unwavering commitment to organizing these debates. “Our commitment to these debates is steadfast. We have a proven track record, and history is on our side,” he added, aiming to reassure the audience.
“We believe that by keeping our doors open and continuing our outreach, we can encourage participation.
Those who wish to lead should be prepared to answer to the public about their governance plans. Our engagement with political parties will continue.”
