Ignore politics; consider competence in constituting Boards – Arthur Kennedy

A hospital administrator and a member of the New Patriotic Party says appointing authorities must consider competence rather than party affiliation in constituting Boards of institutions.

Dr. Arthur Kennedy believes when that is done people with the technical know-how will be able to raise resources to help the institutions they have been appointed to oversee.

His comments follow agitations by workers of the Korle-bu Teaching Hospital who are demanding the dissolution of the board.

They accuse the board of mismanagement.

Sector Minister Alban Bagbin had hinted of the re-constitution of the Board after the resignation of its chairman.

Dr. Kennedy was surprised the Board is being accused by the workers of mismanaging the hospital saying, ?Elsewhere, the boards are not supposed to manage institutions. They govern and then there is a management team that actually manages the institution.?

??When we are naming these board members we should ignore politics and look at competence. Politics plays too much of a role in how we do these things,? he said.

He conceded the problem at Korle-bu may not necessarily be the fault of the managers or board members but inadequate infrastructure to work with and advised successive governments to make available the needed infrastructure and logistics for managers and board members to succeed.
