The Independent Power Generators (IPPs) in Ghana have called on the Minister of Finance to expedite the disbursement of funds owed to them.
In a statement issued on August 5, Dr Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, CEO of the IPPs, stressed the urgency of addressing the delay in releasing these funds, which has been a significant impediment to concluding ongoing negotiations regarding legacy arrears.
Dr Apetorgbor highlighted that despite the Finance Minister’s announcement of an IMF cash release more than a month ago, there was no visible progress in disbursing the funds to the IPPs.
He argued that This delay has become increasingly frustrating and is exacerbating the difficulties the IPPs face in resolving the prolonged re-negotiations.
“The continued delay in disbursing these funds is unbearable and frustrating,” Dr. Apetorgbor said.
“It is imperative that the Ministry treats the payment of these funds as a priority to ensure a stable and reliable power supply in the country.”
He emphasized that the timely resolution of these financial obligations is critical for maintaining the trust and cooperation of the IPPs and ensuring the continuity and stability of Ghana’s power supply.
Dr Apetorgbor urged the Finance Minister to take immediate action to honour the debt and facilitate the conclusion of negotiations with the IPPs.
The appeal reflects growing concerns among the IPPs regarding the sector’s financial stability and its impact on the broader power supply infrastructure in Ghana.
