International Floorball Team Ease Burden Of Special Olympic Team


The Ghana special Olympic team, has received financial support from the International Floorball Team in Ghana, ahead of their participation in the Special Olympic Games, slated for Austria from 14-25, March 2017.

Floorball, is a type of floor hockey with five field players and a goalkeeper in each team. It is played indoors by both men and women, with 96-115.5cm long sticks and a 22-23cm circumference plastic ball with holes. Matches are played in three-twenty minute period.

The International Floorball team, a team of foreigners in Ghana who play Floorball, has been training the Ghana team, to prepare them adequately for the competition.

The team aside their technical assistance to the Ghana team, presented a cheque for GHC 4,000 to ease their financial burden.

In an interview with GNA Sports, Nana Wereko-Ampim, Board Member for the Ghana Special Olympic team, said that the biannual games, will see team Ghana competing in floorball, which is one of the major disciplines at the competition.

“This Winter Games in Austria, will see Ghana playing for gold in the floorball and as part of preparations for the kids, we have had international floorball team in Ghana training them as well as playing trial matches with them.

“It is the only floorball team in Ghana and we find it as an opportunity to have them train our team, to condition them for the tournament ahead.

“The team is basically made up of children from Dzorwulu Special School, because they are the only school in the country with the Floorball team.

According to Wereko-Ampim, preparation for the tournament has not been easy for the team since most of the executives are doing it voluntarily, adding that, they are hopeful of getting some help from some corporate institutions that have pledged their support for them.

“We have decided to volunteer to help these children to play, but through our own strength we cannot do it.

“So far we have had a little help from Max-International at East Legon and the International Floorball Team in Ghana”.

Nana Wereko-Ampim urged individuals and corporate bodies that would like to help to do so, as they also wait for promises from Ecobank, Herbal life, UT Bank and Lexta Ghana produces of Yazz sanitary pad.

Floorball, which is slated, for Graz, Schladming, Ramsau, and Styria in Austria.
