The International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended its recent decision to permit two female boxers to compete in the Paris Olympics amidst significant gender-related debates and criticism.

The IOC justified its stance by asserting that the athletes, Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting, faced unfair treatment due to what was described as an arbitrary decision by the International Boxing Association (IBA).

Both athletes had previously been disqualified from the 2023 World Championships for allegedly not meeting the IBA’s eligibility rules, which include restrictions on athletes with male XY chromosomes competing in women’s events.

Following the IOC’s decision last year to strip the IBA of its recognition, citing governance and financial issues, the IOC took direct control over the boxing competition for the Paris Olympics.

This move was intended to ensure fair play and uphold the principles of inclusivity in sports.

The IOC criticized the IBA’s handling of the disqualification as arbitrary and lacking proper due process.

“These two athletes were the victims of a sudden and arbitrary decision by the IBA,” the IOC stated.

“The decision to disqualify them, as documented in the IBA’s records, was made abruptly by the IBA Secretary General and CEO without proper procedure.”

The controversy surrounding these athletes underscores broader debates in sports about testosterone levels and eligibility criteria for women’s competitions, particularly for athletes with Differences in Sexual Development (DSD).

These conditions can involve variations in genes, hormones, and reproductive organs, leading to individuals having XY chromosomes and testosterone levels typically found in males despite being raised as female.

The IOC’s decision has reignited discussions about the fairness of such regulations across different sports and the need for consistent and equitable treatment of athletes with diverse biological characteristics.

As the Paris Olympics approach, the IOC remains committed to upholding the integrity of sports while ensuring fair and inclusive competition for all athletes, regardless of gender or biological background.
