The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has convened a pivotal meeting in Rabat, Morocco, on ‘Regular Pathways for Human Mobility’ under its Africa-Europe Flagship Initiative.
This initiative aims to facilitate orderly migration within and between Africa and Europe, emphasizing safe and sustainable movement as crucial for development.
Deputy Director General for Operations at IOM, Ugochi Daniels, highlighted the initiative’s goals of bridging skills gaps, boosting fiscal revenues, and harnessing human capital through enhanced regular migration pathways.
Africa’s youthful population, of which 62% are projected to be of working age by 2050, sees migration as pivotal for labour market development amidst demographic shifts.
The meeting seeks consensus among African countries on operationalizing the initiative, promoting regional integration, and bolstering bilateral cooperation for safe migration.
Participants include officials from Initiative countries like Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ethiopia, and others, alongside representatives from the African Union, UN agencies, youth, diaspora, and private sector. The aim is to foster dialogue and best practices in migration governance.
