IOM puts Mediterranean migrant numbers at 600,000

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) indicated on Tuesday that 593,432 migrant and refugee sea arrivals have been reported so far this year, while at least 3,103 migrants have lost their lives since the beginning of 2015.

Figures show that Greece has registered 453,912 arrivals, followed by Italy (136,408), Spain (3,007) and Malta (105).

The central Mediterranean route remains by far the deadliest passage for migrants as 2,814 deaths have been recorded on this passage, compared to 264 fatalities in the Eastern Mediterranean and 25 on the Western Mediterranean and Western African routes.

IOM indicated that Italy’s migrant intake between Jan. 1 and Sept. 30 this year (132,071) was lower than over the same period in 2014 (138,796).

Men also largely outnumbered the number of women arriving on Italian shores, with 99,999 reported over the period, compared to 18,398 women and 13,674 minors.

The six most represented nationalities at the end of September in Italy were Eritrean (35,398), Nigerian (17,886), Somalian (10,050), Sudanese (8,370) and Syrian (7,072).

In Greece, the most represented country of origin was Syria (277,899), followed by Afghanistan (76,620), Iraq (21,552) and Pakistan (14,323).

Over the Jan. 1 to Sept. 30 period last year, a total of 31,000 arrivals were registered in Greece. Enditem
