Kaneshie footbridge

Dr Alfred Oko Vanderpuye will go down as one of the most popular public office holders in Ghana. As the mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly he has personally supervised at different times, the clearing of refuse, directed vehicular traffic and led volunteers to clear the Awudome Cemetery of weeds.

However I do not know whether the mayor is aware about what is happens daily on the shoulders of the Kaneshie Market and the foot bridge close to the market. The bridge was originally meant for pedestrians crisscrossing to and from the Kaneshie Market. However for some time now the bridge has been taken over by traders who deal in all kinds of wares with very little space for pedestrians. The bridge has also become a safe haven for beggars and preachers who use megaphones and public address systems. Most pedestrians? young and old do not enjoy using the bridge whose new occupants decide where the pedestrians would place their feet as they move on the bridge. Accra being so large, I believe that the Accra mayor (Dr Vanderpuye) works through sub metropolitan assemblies and the management of the markets.

If the mayor has not been informed by the sub metropolitan assembly in charge of the Kaneshie Market area he is required to take steps to clear the mess on the Kaneshie foot bridge especially because He noted for advocating and working against congestion in Accra markets especially in the Accra business area. What readers need to know is that apart from city dwellers that make use of the bridge foreign tourists also make use of the bridge. The AMA must do all it could to save the situation by moving traders away from the foot bridge. It is our belief that a drastic action to sanitize the footbridge would not be beyond the ability of the AMA led by Dr Oko Vanderpuye.
