I write with a deep pain in my heart with this commentary I express a great sentiment of psychological harassment because the mother of nature has still not gotten over her abuse even in the 21st century.
The world has been through series of transitions as a result of radical activism in the past by gender activists and other sexist just to redeem women from the abuses meted out to them by society.
Women have in ages past suffered sexual and physical violence, gender inequality and economic segregation and so on. It is therefore glorious that the contemporary woman has been empowered and extricated from the many glass-ceiling that limited them.
As a result, Ghana today can boast of a retired Inspector General of police Mrs Elizabeth Robinson, Mrs Charlotte Osei the Electoral Commissioner, the chief Justice of the republic Mrs Theodora wood, Mrs Hannah Teteh the Foreign minister and many others.
One more splendor that characterizes the campaign against violence on women includes female coach drivers within the metro mass transit(MMT) system of Ghana;competing keenly with their male counterparts.
As a symbol of recognition, On every 25th November ,the world celebrates the international day against violence on women. The world again celebrates mothers on varying dates but annually which is mostly preceded by an extra ordinary fervor and reverence to them.
Why then is society revisiting their dark and unpleasant history ?
The participatory Development Associates Ltd (PDA) once reported, ” The 2005 Ghana Report reveals that, Ghana is amongst the countries that records high levels of gender based violence including physical, psychological, economic and sexual abuse. Records available to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana police service indicated that, between the period of 1999 to May 2010, 109 784 cases of domestic violence were reported of which a greater portion was perpetuated against women.”
PDA further explained that these events were recorded because of the extent to which women were and are still being lowered to a little status in the family.
Is this what the modern Ghanaian society wants to witness again?
Presently, the assailants of the woman’s right in Ghana have putten on a new mask of operation which is the leakage of their nude and other erotic videos. It has become a modern style of visiting vengeance on jilted and offending partners. More also, Innocent women who in their honest quest to satisfy their partners by
getting them these sexually sensitive materials rather get betrayed by their own lovers ,rivals, friends, technicians and other contracted people.
A leaked video of a purported 21 year old Knust student was publicly displayed to thousands of viewers on same campus. Currently on the social media is the distribution of a sensual article of the ex wife of a Ghanaian national team player and that of some security officers.
For Christ sake ,this is insane and an irreparable damage to the integrity of femininity. This emotional discomfort slapped on the modern day Ghanaian woman is unbecoming and comparable to the offence of murder . These distasteful trend of assault on our women is a grave contempt on womanhood and humanity.
The state and it’s security apparatus must rise up against these unscrupulous persons who expose such pictures and videos of our mothers on the media. It’s our collective responsiblity to reinstate the great beauty of our women and protect them for they are the fertility of the universe.
