Lorenzo Musetti continued his sensational run of form on home soil at the Italian Open as he beat Japanese Kei Nishikori in straight sets to reach the third round here on Thursday.

The 18-year-old Italian, who dispatched three-time Grand Slam winner Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in the first round, sent Nishikori packing with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

Gael Monfils, seeded fifth, failed to advance to the third round after he lost to Dominik Koepfer of Germany 6-2, 6-4.

Monfils’ fellow Frenchman Ugo Humbert outlasted seventh seed Fabio Fognini of Italy 7-5, 7-6 (4).

In the women’s tournament, former world number 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus reached the third round with a 6-0, 6-0 win over the third seed Sofia Kenin of the United States.

Fifth seed Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands lost to Slovenia’s Polona Hercog 6-4, 6-4.

Both Johanna Konta, seeded seventh, and Garbine Muguruza, seeded ninth, advanced to the third round.

Konta beat Romania’s Irina Begu 6-0, 6-4, while Muguruza saw off Cori Gauff of the United States 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3.
