The Italian government has given the World Food Program (WFP) about 600,000 U.S. dollars aimed at providing food assistance to people affected by hunger in Zambia, a WFP official said on Thursday.

WFP Country Representative Jennifer Bitonde said the funds were crucial to assist people affected by hunger following poor harvests caused by prolonged dry spells.

She said in a release that the funds will enable her organization to procure 340 tons of food to cover food needs of 99,000 people for a month.

About 1.1 million people are expected to receive support from the WFP while the remaining 1.2 million will be assisted by the Zambian government, she added.

She thanked Italy and other cooperating partners who were coming on board to help the WFP to ensure that the people residing in the areas most affected by the drought could receive the immediate assistance they need.

So far, the U.S. and Sweden have already released funds to the WFP for humanitarian assistance in Zambia. Enditem
