Ivory Coast experts propose “agricultural offensive” to achieve food security

Cote d'Ivoire experts on Tuesday proposed a major "agricultural offensive" to achieve food security in the country.

“It is important for us to think about increasing the quantity as well as the quality of agricultural produce,” the director for National Network for Food Production Jeremie Kassia said during a workshop in Abidjan.

Kassia urged Cote d’Ivoire women to increase farming of food crops to guarantee food security in the country.

He said he supported programs aimed at supporting women engaged in farming of food crops to increase their produce.

“In the region, food production has been faced with challenges such as shortage of fertilizer and other farm inputs. We should take measures to ensure Cote d’Ivoire is able to produce adequate food,” he said.

Speaking during the same forum, head of the Women Organization for Promotion of Farming of Food Crops, Francoise Tra Lou, appealed for intensification of exchanges between stakeholders in the agricultural sector.

“The post election crisis and climate change have had a negative impact on the food situation. It is important that we find ideal solutions to the problem by addressing concerns of women involved in food production,” Tra Lou said.

The World Food and Agriculture Organization, UN Children’s Fund, the World Food Program and Cote d’Ivoire authorities carried out a joint study on food security challenges in the Savannah region which received a large number of those displaced during the crisis period.

The study revealed that a high number of internally displaced persons negatively impacted the capacity of host communities to produce sufficient food.

In this regard, Cote d’Ivoire authorities, supported by international organizations, are seeking strategies to address the food security challenge facing the affected population. Enditem
