Fishermen in James Town, a historic Ga fishing community in Accra with a rich fishing tradition, have reported a significant increase in their catch following the recent lifting of the ban on artisanal and inshore fleet fishing.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, responsible for managing the country’s fishing industry, ended last week’s one-month annual close season. This period is intended to replenish the country’s dwindling fish stocks and allow anglers to mend their equipment and prepare for the fishing season.
In an interview with Citi FM, the James Town fishermen they attributed their successful catch to favourable weather conditions, noting that this year’s catch is significantly better than in previous years.
“For the first time, Sunday and today [Monday] were the best. Sunday was the best. I can say it is because of the weather,” the chief fisherman at James Town told Citi FM.
The fishermen are not just hopeful, but optimistic that this trend will continue, bringing relief to the community and boosting the local economy.
