JD Vance, Donald Trump’s vice-presidential selection, delivered a resolute primetime speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, pledging to advocate for working-class Americans he believes have been neglected by Democratic leadership.

The Ohio senator, introduced to millions of viewers nationwide, drew on his upbringing in the Midwest to criticize “career politicians” like President Joe Biden, asserting that Trump represents the country’s “last best hope.”

Vance, 39, known for his bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy, which chronicles his impoverished Appalachian upbringing, accused America’s ruling class of undermining communities through trade deals and foreign conflicts. He highlighted issues from economic downturns to immigration policies as failures of governance.

“Donald Trump represents America’s last best hope to restore what – if lost – may never be found again, Vance declared, emphasizing his belief in Trump’s ability to effect substantial change.

Married to Usha Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants, Vance discussed the importance of controlled immigration policies and advocated that newcomers should integrate on American terms.

While acknowledging past criticisms of Trump, Vance reconciled his differences and received Trump’s endorsement before winning a Senate seat in 2022.

Democrats have scrutinized Vance’s past statements, including his earlier dismissal of Trump and controversial remarks on Ukraine and abortion. Vance has moderated his stance on abortion to align with the Republican platform, emphasizing state-level decisions.

During his speech, Vance focused primarily on domestic issues, steering clear of foreign policy discussions despite the day’s conference theme. He emphasized America’s role in global peace and readiness to defend national interests under a renewed Trump administration.

Vance’s selection has sparked interest and debate among voters, with many learning about him for the first time through his convention address. Political analysts suggest his impact on the election may be marginal but acknowledge his practical communication skills and potential influence on public perception of Trump’s candidacy.

As the convention progresses toward Donald Trump’s forthcoming address, Vance’s debut marks a pivotal moment in the Republican campaign, aiming to energize supporters and sway undecided voters ahead of November’s election.
