Joe Jackson, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Dalex Finance, has voiced sharp criticism of the current Akufo-Addo administration’s size and effectiveness, suggesting it fails to deliver meaningful outcomes for Ghanaians.
In a candid assessment on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, July 27, Jackson remarked, “The size of this government is not fit for purpose. It is too big; otherwise, why is the vice president saying he will reduce the size of government?”
Jackson’s remarks reflect growing concerns over the efficacy of government spending and structure amid broader economic challenges in Ghana. He underscored a perceived disconnect between promising macroeconomic indicators highlighted by Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam and the tangible benefits perceived by ordinary citizens.
While acknowledging positive trends in economic metrics during Dr. Adam’s mid-year budget presentation, Jackson attributed the populace’s inability to feel these benefits to systemic corruption.
“Corruption could be eating 40 percent of our public revenue away,” Jackson lamented, asserting that despite favourable economic figures, corruption impedes actual development and leaves citizens without noticeable improvements in their daily lives.
Finance Minister Dr Mohammed Amin Adam recently lauded Ghana’s economic progress, citing a 4.7 percent GDP growth rate for the first quarter of 2024, surpassing earlier projections. He also highlighted reductions in inflation rates and stabilized exchange rates as indicators of economic stability and growth.
Dr. Adam expressed confidence in the government’s trajectory, emphasizing the success of recent economic policies and initiatives to sustain growth and fiscal responsibility. These include successful negotiations with international creditors and substantial debt relief programs.
As debates intensify over economic governance and accountability, Jackson’s critique of government efficiency resonates with broader public sentiment. It highlights ongoing challenges in translating macroeconomic gains into tangible improvements for all Ghanaians.
