The Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba on Thursday said he will take the country’s department of home affairs to force them to depot undocumented migrants.
Mashaba who is from the opposition political party Democratic Alliance, issued a statement indicating that he has instructed his legal team to weigh the options of taking legal action against the home affairs department.
He stated that he has engaged the home affairs over illegal migrants with no success.
Mashaba stated that illegal migrants affect Johannesburg’s ability to provide accommodation and deliver services.
Mashaba said there are over 120 undocumented migrants housed at a temporary shelter following the fire at the Cape York building in the inner city on July 5, 2017.
The Mayor also stated that in their 11 raids with department of home affairs, they have arrested 267 undocumented migrants.
The country’s home affairs department noted the legal threat and said they will respond at the appropriate time.
Mava Scott, spokesperson of the minister of home affairs, said, “The minister will await the official legal processes and engagement on the matter and respond accordingly at the right time.” Enditem
