John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has praised the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana for its decision to publish election results in real-time at each polling station. This move enhances transparency in the electoral process.

Speaking to supporters at Shai-Osudoku on Monday, September 16, as part of his campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region, Mahama expressed his approval of the EC’s announcement.

“I am happy with the Electoral Commission for what they just announced—that they are going to declare the results at every polling station. That will make the elections more transparent,” Mahama said.

The EC has pledged to update election results on its website in real-time. This assurance followed a recommendation from Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns. Dr Chambas had urged the EC to publish results promptly to build trust and confidence in the electoral process.

During the inaugural Diplomatic Honours ceremony in Accra on September 14, Dr Chambas emphasized the importance of transparency in elections. They noted that the EC could regain the confidence of political parties and stakeholders by adopting measures that ensure openness and accountability.

“It is not too late to work to win the trust and confidence of all parties and stakeholders in the electoral process,” he stated.

Dr Chambas specifically highlighted that the publication of polling station results on the EC’s website would significantly advance the credibility and transparency of the electoral process. He noted that such a measure would address the concerns of various stakeholders who have repeatedly recommended it.

In response to Dr Chambas’ recommendation, Deputy Commissioner of the EC, Dr Bossman Asare, confirmed that the commission would implement the measure for the 2024 elections.

“This is something that the commission has discussed and is going to do in 2024. We will ensure that polling station results are published on our website before any legal challenges are filed,” Dr Asare told Joy News on Sunday.

The decision comes amidst concerns raised by the NDC regarding alleged irregularities in the voter register. Mahama’s commendation reflects a broader push for greater transparency and accountability in Ghana’s electoral processes as the country prepares for the upcoming elections.
