Journalists chide Azerbaijani gov?t?Over violation of human rights

The Azerbaijani Government was been chided for its weak and inhumane attitude which infringes on the human rights of most of its citizenry.

Azerbaijan for several decades has been noted for its failure to uphold and protect the fundamental human rights of its people with government officials considered the worst culprits.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the recently held Oil, Gas and Media Conference, at the Gulustan Palace in Azerbaijan, the Executive Director of International Press Institute (IPI), a global organisation based in Vienna, Austria with its focus on promoting Press Freedom worldwide, Madam Alison Bethel McKenzie, lauded journalists across the world for their dedication to serve despite the numerous challenges they face.

According to her, the work of journalists has become dangerous as a result of the entrenched positions taken by some of their country?s government adding that such attitudes infringe on their rights to operate as watchdogs of the society.

Madam Bethel McKenzie further expressed worry over the bad treatment meted by some governments against journalists who may in one way or the other expose them for their nefarious acts, citing Azerbaijan as a typical example.

The President of the host country, Ilham Aliyev, was called upon to immediately order the release of two journalists who have been molested and incarcerated for reporting on recent protest in front of the Presidential Palace.

Madam Bethel McKenzie called on democratic governments to condemn the atrocious acts against two Azerbaijani journalists.

?Journalists indeed have their rights to operate freely and must be respected by all for who they are and what they stood for,? she added.

On his part, the Chairman of the Azerbaijani branch of the International Press Institute (IPI), Mr. Umud Mirzayev, expressed joy over the call for the release of the two journalists who he claimed were wrongfully incarcerated for reporting the truth.

Mr. Mirzayev who also doubles as the Chairman of the Organising Committee and Chairman of the International Eurasia Press Fund was of the hope that the conference would offer the opportunity for foreign journalists to hear first-hand accounts from Azerbaijani journalists and experts as well.

Some journalists in an interview with this reporter also opposed the bad practice by the government of Azerbaijan and urged world powers such as the USA and its allies to call the Azerbaijani government to order and press for adherence to the rights of its people.
