CBS News reports, citing an Associated Press survey, that Vice President Kamala Harris has garnered sufficient backing from Democratic delegates to clinch the party’s presidential nomination.
As of Monday evening, Harris has received endorsements from over 1,976 delegates, surpassing the threshold required to secure the nomination in the first round of voting at the Democratic National Convention (DNC).
The DNC, scheduled from August 1-7, is a crucial event where the party’s nominee is officially chosen.
Expressing pride in the broad support received, Harris anticipates formally accepting the nomination. Despite being non-binding, endorsements from delegations representing at least 27 states solidify her path to becoming the Democratic nominee.
Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the race, Harris’s campaign has seen a significant surge in donations and endorsements from prominent Democrats. Has reinforced her position as the frontrunner.
Addressing her campaign staff in Wilmington, Delaware, Harris emphasized her vision for the country’s future. She pledged to unite Democrats and the nation, offering a hopeful and optimistic outlook that resonated with her audience.
Meanwhile, Biden, recuperating from Covid-19, urged his team to rally behind Harris. He emphasized her qualifications and the urgency of defeating Trump in the upcoming election, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Biden is expected to return to the White House on Tuesday afternoon following his period of isolation in Delaware.
