Newly appointed Asante Kotoko Technical Director Karim Zito has raised concerns about the comfort levels within the squad, cautioning that excessive relaxation could undermine the team’s competitive edge.

Speaking at his official unveiling, the experienced tactician revealed his initial observations after visiting the club’s facilities and interacting with players. “When we visited the clubhouse, I noticed how comfortable they feel there,” Zito stated. “Sometimes, when people become too comfortable, they forget their purpose in life.”

The interim head coach, who replaces Prosper Narteh Ogum, drew comparisons with his previous club: “I don’t know about Hearts of Oak, but I know Dreams FC. Comfort can be dangerous if not managed properly.”

Zito takes charge of a Kotoko side currently fourth in the Ghana Premier League, six points behind leaders Bibiani Gold Stars with six matches remaining in the 2024/25 season. His appointment marks a return to familiar territory, having previously served as both player and coach for the Porcupine Warriors.

The 2021 U-20 AFCON winning coach brings recent continental experience from guiding Dreams FC to the CAF Confederation Cup semifinals. His immediate challenge will be instilling greater discipline and urgency in a squad that has shown inconsistency this season.

Kotoko’s management will be hoping Zito’s no-nonsense approach and understanding of the club’s culture can spark improved performances during the critical final stretch of the season. His comments suggest a deliberate shift in team mentality as the club seeks to close the gap on league leaders and reestablish its dominant position in Ghanaian football.

The veteran coach’s warning about complacency reflects broader concerns in Ghanaian football, where top clubs often struggle to maintain high standards between seasons. His track record of developing disciplined, tactically astute teams suggests Kotoko may undergo significant changes in both playing style and squad mentality in coming weeks.
