An Indian policeman was killed and several others wounded Friday in an ongoing militant attack on a police station in Indian- controlled Kashmir, officials said.
A group of fidayeen (suicide attackers), believed to be three in number, stormed Raj Bagh police station at Kathua district, 333 km south of Srinagar city, summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
“There is a lot of chaos at the spot as militants wearing army uniforms have managed to sneak inside during this surprise attack, ” a police official said.
“The firing is going on and so far we have reports one policeman has been killed and several others are wounded.”
Officials said the policeman was posted on the gate of police station and was shot by the militants while forcing their entry inside.
“We are trying to rescue the holed up policemen first,” the official said.
“Complete details will come out after the gunfight ends.”
Reports said a massive gunfire can be heard near the police station.
Authorities have rushed in huge contingents of police and Indian army troopers to the spot to take on militants.
The police station has been cordoned off and the Srinagar-Jammu highway in the area has been closed for vehicular traffic. Enditem
